Departments Aboard A Merchant Navy Ship

The departments in a Merchant Navy ship, broadly speaking, can be classified into three main heads namely the Deck (Nautical) Department, the Engine Department and the Service Department.

(i) Deck (Nautical) Department: The Deck Department includes the Master (Captain), Chief Mate (Chief Officer)  First Mate, Second Mate, Third Mate, Serang, Able Seamen etc. Their duties consist of navigating the ship safely and by the most economical route. These officers are also responsible for loading, caring for and unloading the cargo at its destination. They carry out the repairs and maintenance of the ship in order to keep it shipshape. The duties of the Captain or the Master of the Ship are defined under the relevant section.

(ii) Engine Department: The Engine Department is manned by a Chief Engineer, Second Engineer, Third Engineer, Fourth Engineer, Electrical Officer and other staff. They are responsible for proper maintenance and functioning of the ship's engines and other machinery on the ship.

(iii) Catering Department: This Department, which carries out the cooking and housekeeping duties on the ship is headed by a Chief Steward and Chief Cook and consists of cooks, mess men, etc.  On a large cruise liner (Passenger Ship), this department is of utmost importance as it is responsible for the satisfaction of the passengers on holiday.
